Are Christians Still Sinners? A Biblical Perspective
Many people say, “We are all sinners,” because everyone falls short of God’s standard. Scriptures such as Romans 3:23, Romans 3:10, Ecclesiastes 7:20 and 1 John 1:8 affirm that no one is completely without sin. The Christian life, however, is not presented as a licence to live in sin. Jesus calls believers to grow toward spiritual maturity and wholeness. Through faith in Christ’s death and resurrection, believers are forgiven and empowered to pursue a life that pleases God. This does not mean Christians never fail. A believer may still fall into sin because of human weakness, but should repent and seek God’s forgiveness rather than remain comfortable in sin. From this perspective, a sinner is someone who lives continually in sin, while a Christian follows Christ and strives to turn away from it. A Christian may sin occasionally, but should not make sin a way of life.
