Understanding Rhythm, Meter and the Backbeat in Music

Rhythm is the organisation of sound and silence over time. Meter gives music a regular pulse by grouping beats into measures, also called bars. Many songs use groups of two, three or four beats, such as 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 time. The first beat is often emphasised, making the pattern easier to follow. In much pop and rock music, the backbeat shifts emphasis to the second and fourth beats of a 4/4 measure. This is commonly played on the snare drum, while guitars, keyboards, bass and drums work together as the rhythm section.
