Ethiopia Submits Bid to Host 2028 AFCON After 50-Year Wait
Ethiopia has formally submitted a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, backed by a sovereign guarantee from its government. The country plans to build and upgrade stadiums in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, Hawassa, Jimma and Mekele to meet CAF standards. Ethiopia’s national team has recently played home matches abroad because it lacks approved venues. Ethiopia last hosted AFCON in 1976 and won the tournament on home soil in 1962. Its bid could face competition from countries including Egypt and South Africa, while Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are scheduled to co-host the 2027 edition.
