What Happens to Government Vehicles When Nigerian Officials Leave Office?

When a minister, governor, permanent secretary or political appointee leaves office, any vehicle assigned for official duties does not automatically become personal property. Vehicles bought with public funds remain government assets and must be managed under applicable public-property disposal rules. Depending on the needs and condition of the vehicle, it may be reassigned to another official, transferred to a different government agency, retained by the institution or declared unserviceable. The key accountability questions are simple: Was the vehicle returned or properly transferred? If it was sold, was the process approved and was the money accounted for? Nigerians have a right to demand answers because these vehicles were purchased with public funds.
