Civil Society Warns: 19,980 Killed, 12,362 Abducted Since Tinubu’s Inauguration
A coalition of 52 civil society organisations reports that since President Tinubu took office in May 2023, nearly 20,000 Nigerians have been killed and over 12,000 abducted, based on data from an international monitoring body. The groups say at least 1,486 security personnel died on active duty and more than 865 students were kidnapped from schools, deepening the country’s out-of-school children crisis. They also raised alarm over extrajudicial killings and accidental strikes on civilians during security operations. Criticising the government’s surveillance-to-action gap, the coalition accused political leaders of focusing on the 2027 elections instead of tackling insecurity. They called on the federal government to strengthen intelligence and rapid-response systems, prosecute perpetrators, disrupt kidnapping networks and provide humanitarian support to victims and displaced persons.
