Abia Receives 36,000 Applications for 4,000 Teaching Jobs
The Abia State Government says more than 36,000 people applied in the second recruitment round for 4,000 teachers in public primary and secondary schools. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, said about 21,000 applicants progressed to oral interviews after meeting a 40% benchmark. He said selections were based on schools’ needs, locations and subject shortages, not political influence. According to the ministry, 5,385 applicants met the relevant cut-off marks, while other qualified candidates will remain in a pool for future vacancies. Applicants who could not present original certificates, or whose certificates were more than five years old after graduation, were disqualified. Successful candidates will begin a one-week orientation on 7 September 2026. The state also plans to introduce the new federal education curriculum from September 2026 and support teachers to obtain TRCN certification within two years.
