Experts Say Poor Leadership, Not Diversity, Is Deepening Nigeria’s Divisions

Peace and conflict scholar Professor Isaac Olawale Albert says Nigeria’s ethnic, religious and regional diversity should be a national strength rather than a source of conflict. He argued that weak institutions, poor leadership and political manipulation have worsened social divisions and insecurity. Speaking at a governance and peace colloquium in Abeokuta, Albert called for a leadership recruitment process built on competence, integrity and national responsibility. He also urged citizens to take a more active role in shaping the country’s political system. Other speakers said political actors often exploit poverty, ethnicity and religion to retain power. Participants called for inclusive governance, social justice, accountable institutions and sustained dialogue to strengthen national cohesion.
