Police Arrest Kano Man Over Alleged ₦3.5m Romance Scam and Sextortion Threats

Police Arrest Kano Man Over Alleged ₦3.5m Romance Scam and Sextortion Threats

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre says it arrested Abdulwajeed Abdullahi in Kano over allegations of romance scams, fraud and threats to release women’s intimate photos and videos. Police allege that he used the online identity “Captain Junaid” to build romantic relationships with victims before demanding money. Investigators said one victim allegedly lost ₦3.5 million, while another woman in Bauchi reportedly paid $1,500 in a supposed foreign-exchange trading deal. Police said devices recovered from the suspect contained intimate materials belonging to several women, as well as allegedly forged certificates and identity cards. In separate cases, the centre also announced the arrest of a Lagos resident over an alleged business email compromise operation involving more than 12.5 million email logs and suspected proceeds above ₦100 million. Another suspect was arrested over an alleged WhatsApp-based investment fraud, with investigators tracing transactions of about ₦3.62 billion through a technology business and cryptocurrency accounts. All suspects remain allegations at this stage, and police said they would pursue further legal action and seek the recovery of assets where applicable.
