Abuja City Gate Needs Safe Pedestrian Access, Not Just a Car Park
The renewed Abuja City Gate has become more than a landmark people drive past. Families gather there, young people take photographs, visitors use the fountain, and informal trade is growing around the site. But many visitors arrive on foot or are dropped off by public transport some distance away. They must cross fast-moving carriageways without a controlled pedestrian crossing. The 60-space car park serves motorists, but it does not solve access for people walking to the Gate. Abuja should respond to how residents are already using the space. A safe crossing, lower vehicle speeds, a designated drop-off point, shaded areas, parking overflow plans and a managed trading edge would make the landmark safer and more welcoming. The City Gate must still support presidential and diplomatic movement. Yet its growing everyday use shows that public spaces should be designed for both ceremony and the people who come to enjoy them.
