Nigeria’s Biodiversity at Risk: NCF Urges President Tinubu to Sign Endangered Species Bill
The Nigeria Conservation Foundation warns that the country’s rich biodiversity faces unprecedented threats and calls on President Tinubu to urgently sign the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill, 2025 into law. The proposed bill would strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework against wildlife crimes. It aims to improve prosecution of offenders, regulate wildlife trade and deter exploitation of threatened species. With over 90% of its original forest cover lost, Nigeria’s ecosystems—from savannas and rainforests to coastal wetlands—are under severe pressure from deforestation, habitat fragmentation, oil pollution and illegal hunting. Biodiversity loss now threatens food security, livelihoods, public health and ecological stability. The NCF highlights Nigeria’s revised National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, aligned with global targets to halt biodiversity loss by 2030. It urges federal and state governments, communities and businesses to fund and implement conservation measures, restore degraded habitats and adopt sustainable practices locally.
