Toluwanisings’ Death Raises Fresh Concerns About Emergency Cardiac Care in Nigeria
I am deeply saddened by the reported death of gospel singer Toluwanisings, whose real name was Olayemi Bayonle Bolaji. His passing has renewed concerns about how quickly Nigerians can access emergency medical care after a sudden collapse. A person who slumps may be experiencing cardiac arrest, an abnormal heart rhythm, a heart attack or another serious medical emergency. In some cases, rapid CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator can improve the chances of survival. Every minute without prompt intervention can reduce those chances. Defibrillators and trained responders should be available in more public places, transport hubs and health centres. We also need stronger emergency-response systems, better-equipped hospitals and greater public awareness of CPR. Nigeria must do more to prevent avoidable deaths.
