Nigerians Make Up 91.7% of Candidates for WACS August 2026 Primary Exam
The West African College of Surgeons has released its candidate list for the August 2026 Primary Examination, with 1,145 doctors registered. This is up from 946 candidates in March, representing a 21% increase. Nigerian doctors account for 1,050 candidates, or 91.7% of the total. The remaining 95 candidates are from other West African countries, including Ghana, Gambia and Sierra Leone. Among the Nigerian candidates, Obstetrics and Gynaecology has the highest number with 306 registrations. Surgery follows with 218, Radiology with 175, Orthopaedics with 120, Anaesthesia with 101, Ophthalmology with 55, Dental Surgery with 46, and Otorhinolaryngology with 29. The figures have renewed discussion about specialist training, migration opportunities and the declining value of Nigerian medical salaries compared with neighbouring countries.
