Charly Boy, born Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, has built an unconventional public life across music, television, activism and social commentary. The son of late Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, he chose a path far removed from the career expectations around him. He spent a year in the seminary and later turned down an oil industry job secured after his national service to pursue music. His distinctive leather-clad punk persona, developed in the late 1980s, helped make him one of Nigeria’s most recognisable entertainers.
