Nigeria’s Richest Local Governments: Lagos Councils Lead FAAC Revenue Rankings

Nigeria’s local governments receive monthly allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), while some also earn internally from property rates, markets, permits, transport fees and other levies. Revenue data for the first half of 2024 placed Alimosho at the top, with about ₦11.13 billion in FAAC allocations. Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Kosofe followed with roughly ₦8.90 billion and ₦8.80 billion respectively. Lagos councils dominated the leading positions, while Abuja Municipal Area Council was among the major non-Lagos entries. Lagos benefits from Nigeria’s largest urban economy, dense population, commercial activity and high-value properties. However, high council revenue does not automatically mean better roads, clinics, schools or drainage systems. The figures raise a bigger question for residents: how transparently are local government funds managed, and are the councils with the biggest budgets delivering services that match their revenue?
