Court Sentences Ex-Legislative Aide Over Ogun East Constituency Contracts

A former House of Representatives member, Onamusi Onadeko, has been sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine, over his role in constituency contracts while serving as a senior legislative aide to the late Senator Buruji Kashamu. The ICPC said companies linked to Onadeko were awarded contracts worth about ₦68.7 million for projects including ambulances, hospital equipment and drugs, and classroom construction in communities across Ogun East. The prosecution also accused him of making conflicting statements about his directorship in one of the companies. The FCT High Court held that legislative aides are public officers under the ICPC Act, even where their appointments are temporary, fixed-term or non-pensionable. Onadeko was convicted on the count relating to inconsistent statements and acquitted on several other counts.
