P. L. Travers: The Life and Legacy of Mary Poppins’ Creator

P. L. Travers, born Helen Lyndon Goff in Queensland, Australia, was the Australian-British writer behind the Mary Poppins series. She began her career in theatre and journalism before publishing the first Mary Poppins book in 1934. Travers wrote seven Mary Poppins sequels, as well as poetry, novels and non-fiction. Walt Disney adapted Mary Poppins into a major film in 1964, although Travers was reportedly dissatisfied with parts of the adaptation. She never married and adopted a son, Camillus Travers Hone, from Ireland. Travers was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1977. She died in London in 1996 at the age of 96, leaving behind one of children’s literature’s most recognisable characters.
