Can Abuja’s Velodrome Turn Track Cycling Into a Sustainable Sports Investment?
Nigeria’s track-cycling opportunity is centred on the existing velodrome at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, not an unverified ₦180 billion new-build project. The facility hosted the 2026 African Para-Track and Track Cycling Championships, showing that Abuja can stage continental competition. The bigger challenge is sustaining that success. Athletes need predictable access to the track, specialist equipment, qualified coaches and mechanics, regular competitions and transparent management of the public facility. The Federal Government’s wider stadium rehabilitation plans and the National Sports Commission’s proposed infrastructure bond may support sports development. However, there is no confirmed dedicated funding allocation for the velodrome. Any investment proposal should clearly state its scope, funding source, operating costs and expected benefits. Nigeria can build a stronger track-cycling system by confirming the venue’s international certification status, improving maintenance and access, and creating a pathway for junior, women’s and para-cycling athletes.
