Pope Leo XIV Unveils Historic 2026 Africa Tour as Nigeria Waits 28 Years for Papal Visit
The Vatican has announced Pope Leo XIV’s 10-day apostolic journey through Africa from April 13–23, 2026. He will visit Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea to meet Catholic communities, Christian leaders and heads of state. This will be Pope Leo’s first trip to Africa since his election in May 2025. His visit to Algeria marks the first papal visit to a Muslim-majority country, underscoring his commitment to interfaith dialogue and global peace. Nigeria—home to one of Africa’s largest Catholic populations—will not be on this itinerary. The country last received a papal visit in 1998 by Pope John Paul II, leaving Nigerians still awaiting a return after 28 years.
