Tinubu Should Clean the Payroll, Reform Football and Sell the Refineries

I welcome President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a forensic audit of federal government systems, including IPPIS, after concerns over ghost workers, fake agencies and weak internal controls. Nigeria needs more than another report. The audit should lead to verified recoveries, prosecutions, abolished paper agencies and stronger safeguards for public funds. I also support comprehensive reform of Nigerian football. The Super Eagles and Super Falcons have immense talent and national support, but poor administration, welfare disputes and weak accountability have repeatedly held the game back. Replacing officials alone is not enough; the NFF needs transparent leadership, audited accounts, stakeholder representation and measurable performance standards. However, I disagree with the continued commitment of public money to ageing, government-owned refineries that have consumed huge sums without delivering reliable results. If capable private investors can run them commercially, the government should sell or concession them through a transparent process and redirect scarce funds to hospitals, schools, roads, electricity and water. Ultimately, Nigerians need implementation, not announcements. The payroll audit, football reforms and refinery decisions must produce clear results and accountability before election-season politics slows government action.
