Sandra Izsadore on Fela, Afrobeat and the Decline of Conscious Music
Sandra Izsadore, the American singer, activist and former partner of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, reflects on her role in the political awakening that shaped Afrobeat. She recalls meeting Fela in 1969, introducing him to Black consciousness and activism, and becoming the only featured lead vocalist on a Fela record through the 1977 song “Upside Down.” In this interview, Izsadore discusses their relationship, her experience of Nigeria and Fela’s household, and why she rejected polygamy.
