Adamawa Groom-to-Be Dies in Custody Months After Court Ruled His Detention Illegal
Umar Abubakar, who was arrested in Mubi five days before his planned wedding in May, has died at the Yolde-Pate Custodial Centre in Yola. He was among 42 residents arrested during an operation targeting suspected political thugs and other criminal elements. A Federal High Court in Yola ruled on July 23 that the arrests and continued detention of the detainees were illegal and ordered their release on a bond to maintain good behaviour. However, the police said they remained in custody under a fresh remand warrant issued by a magistrate’s court in Mubi. Abubakar’s lawyer said he collapsed during a court sitting on September 30 and was not granted medical bail. His family is demanding an independent investigation into his death and the medical care he received. The cause of death has not been independently established.
