British-Nigerian Olympian CJ Ujah Charged in £300,000 Crypto Scam Probe
British-Nigerian sprinter CJ Ujah has been charged with conspiracy to defraud as part of a police investigation into an alleged cryptocurrency scam that left one victim £300,000 out of pocket. The 32-year-old appeared at Thanet Magistrates’ Court on April 30 and was granted bail ahead of his next appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court on May 28. Authorities say Ujah is one of ten suspects accused of operating an organised crime group. Victims were reportedly contacted by phone calls from individuals posing as police officers and representatives of cryptocurrency firms, then tricked into sharing security details that allowed funds to be siphoned from their crypto wallets. Coordinated raids by Kent Police, the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police took place across Kent, Essex and London on April 29. Born and raised in Enfield to Nigerian parents, Ujah won 4x100m relay gold at the 2017 World Championships and Olympic silver in Tokyo before it was later stripped due to a doping violation. He holds two British 100m titles and graduated in sports science from Middlesex University. No plea has been entered and the case is ongoing.
