Queen Oladunni Decency: Nigeria’s Trailblazing Female Juju Guitarist
Queen Oladunni Decency, born Serifatu Oladunni Oduguwa, is widely regarded as Nigeria’s first female guitarist and a pioneer of Juju music. In the 1960s, she formed Her Majesty Queen Oladunni Decency and Her Unity Orchestra at just 17. At a time when the genre was dominated by men, she led her own band, performed across the country and earned respect for her guitar playing, voice and commanding stage presence. She recorded several popular songs and helped expand the space for women as instrumentalists and band leaders in Nigerian music. Her career ended early when she died in 1978, aged 28, but her influence remains part of Juju music history.
