Atiku Challenges Tinubu Government’s Claims on Debt, Subsidy Savings and Living Costs

Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Tinubu administration’s defence of its economic policies, arguing that official presentations cannot outweigh the hardship Nigerians face. He disputed claims that fuel-subsidy savings are reducing government debt. He said the Federal Government’s exposure to the Central Bank of Nigeria rose from about ₦26.9 trillion in May 2023 to more than ₦40.38 trillion, describing the shift from Ways and Means advances to Treasury Bills and bonds as restructuring rather than repayment. Atiku also questioned claims that subsidy savings are improving workers’ welfare and funding student loans. He cited outstanding wage-related payments and noted that NELFUND previously reported receiving ₦50 billion from recovered EFCC funds. He said rising food prices, inflation, business closures, unemployment and naira depreciation show that the government should be judged by citizens’ living conditions, not policy presentations.
