Nigeria Investigates Suspected Ebola Cases as DR Congo Outbreak Raises Regional Alarm
Health authorities in Nigeria have isolated two suspected Ebola cases for laboratory testing as a major outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo raises concerns across the region. The reported outbreak has killed more than 5,000 people and infected over 10,300 since May 2026. Officials in Kenya and Uganda have also stepped up surveillance and border-health measures. Uganda says it has not recorded new infections since August, while Kenya has reported confirmed cases linked to the outbreak. The outbreak is reportedly linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Health workers in affected parts of DR Congo are also facing insecurity and attacks, making testing, treatment and community outreach more difficult. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. Health experts say early detection, isolation, contact tracing and public cooperation remain crucial to stopping further transmission.
