Why Do More Religious Centres Not Produce More Accountability?

Nigeria has churches, mosques, prayer camps, vigils and crusades everywhere. In theory, a deeply religious society should produce more honesty, compassion and responsibility. Yet corruption, fraud, rape, robbery and dishonesty remain common. My concern is not that people believe in God. It is when faith becomes an excuse to avoid accountability. If someone cheats or steals from me, prayer and forgiveness do not erase the harm. I still want restitution. Forgiveness should not replace justice or personal responsibility. We also need to ask whether people are encouraged to think independently. A pastor, prophet, imam or religious text should not stop anyone from asking questions. Too often, people pray over problems that citizens and government should solve through action, planning and accountability. Religious institutions should also respect their communities. Loudspeakers and late-night services should not disturb people’s sleep. The strongest form of evangelism is a life that reflects honesty, compassion and responsibility.
