TEDL Warns of Surge in Vandalism and Theft Targeting Power Infrastructure in Imo
Transpower Electricity Distribution Limited (TEDL) has raised alarm over increasing attacks on power installations, operational staff and the public in parts of Imo State. The company says vandalism, theft and violence pose serious threats to safety, economic growth and a stable electricity supply. TEDL commends the Nigeria Police Force, Imo State Command and other security agencies for arresting and arraigning two suspects in Owerri on charges of criminal conspiracy, assault, malicious damage and theft. The incident on April 22 saw a resident severely injured and property—including a mobile phone and cash—stolen from a private residence. Highlighting the wider impact, TEDL notes that each act of sabotage disrupts homes, markets, hospitals and schools. The company stresses that such crime also hampers efforts to restore power, leaving communities in darkness and businesses at a loss. TEDL appeals to community leaders, market associations and residents to protect public infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities. It vows continued collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders to strengthen surveillance and bring offenders to justice.
