Why Nigerian Passport Holders Still Face Tough Travel Restrictions
Nigeria’s passport is again under scrutiny after IziVisa ranked it 181st globally in October 2026. The index listed 24 visa-free destinations, 16 visa-on-arrival options and 43 electronic-visa destinations for Nigerian citizens. The result should not be read as proof that Nigeria suddenly lost dozens of travel destinations. Henley & Partners ranked Nigeria 90th in July with access to 44 destinations, but the two indexes use different methods and categories. A direct comparison would require matching the same destinations and entry rules over the same period. Even so, Nigerian travellers face more pre-travel visa requirements than citizens of several African countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Morocco, Kenya and Ghana. Visa applications can mean extra costs, extensive documents, waiting periods and uncertainty for students, businesspeople, tourists and families. Improving travel access will depend largely on diplomatic engagement, reciprocal arrangements and visa-waiver negotiations with other countries. Travellers should still confirm current entry requirements with the official immigration authorities of their destination before making plans.
