Kano Records 875,593 Out-of-School Children in 2026 Survey, Down 11.5%
Kano State says a 2026 statewide survey has identified 875,593 out-of-school children, a decrease of 113,641 from the 989,234 recorded in UNICEF’s 2023 data. The Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, said the new figure is based on verified, disaggregated data across local government areas, age groups and gender, unlike earlier estimates drawn from national samples and other sources. The state says school construction and rehabilitation, enrolment drives, free uniforms, learning materials and partnerships with development organisations have supported progress. However, officials stressed that nearly 876,000 children still out of school require urgent, community-specific action from parents, traditional and religious leaders, civil society and government.
