Akinola Davies Jr.’s ‘My Father’s Shadow’ Arrives on Netflix September 21
Akinola Davies Jr.’s acclaimed debut feature, My Father’s Shadow, will begin streaming on Netflix on September 21. The film stars Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù as Folarin, alongside Godwin Chiemerie Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo. Set during the uncertainty surrounding Nigeria’s June 12, 1993 election crisis, the drama follows two brothers who travel with their estranged father from their rural home into Lagos. Folarin is determined to collect his long-overdue salary, while the children confront family tensions and the upheaval of the city. Co-written by Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies, the 16mm film had a successful cinema run and earned recognition at major international and Nigerian award events. Its Netflix release gives viewers another opportunity to see a Nigerian story shaped by a defining period in the country’s history.
