20 Prospective Corps Members Still Held After Imo Kidnapping as Ransom Falls to ₦100m
Twenty prospective NYSC members travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State. Their captors initially demanded ₦50 million for each victim, or ₦1 billion in total. The demand has reportedly been reduced to ₦5 million per person, bringing it to ₦100 million. Families say the victims are being mistreated and have appealed for urgent intervention. Police reportedly located a suspected kidnappers' camp but delayed an operation after intelligence suggested the area may contain improvised explosive devices. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of prospective corps members travelling long distances to orientation camps and the security measures available on high-risk routes.
