At 27, I have become wary of love, trust and lending money in relationships. I dated my best friend after years of struggling to feel deeply connected to anyone, but our relationship changed when she began borrowing money she could not repay. The loans started with small emergencies. They later included money for travel plans, relocation and rent in Lagos. By the time we broke up, she owed me about ₦1.7 million and stopped responding when I asked about a repayment plan. I have since lost my job and gone into debt while searching for work. I still do not know whether I will recover the money, and a relationship is the last thing on my mind right now.
