I Don’t Want My Parents or Twin Sisters at My Graduation

I recently graduated from university, but I do not plan to invite my parents or younger twin sisters to my convocation in Lagos. I know they will expect to attend, but I would rather say the journey is unnecessary than explain why their presence would make me unhappy. Since my sisters were born, I have felt pushed aside in my own family. My parents seem more forgiving of them, while I am held to stricter standards. At family events, they receive most of the attention and I often feel invisible. My graduation is a major achievement that I worked hard for. I want to enjoy it without worrying that the familiar pattern will repeat itself and leave me feeling like an outsider. For now, I would rather celebrate alone than let a day meant for me become another moment where I fade into the background.
