Supreme Court Restores Electoral Act Provisions Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Supreme Court has restored key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 on political party membership registers and the nomination of candidates. In a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro, the seven-member panel upheld INEC's appeal and overturned a July Court of Appeal ruling that had voided Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2). The ruling may renew legal scrutiny of aspirants and candidates who changed political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The court also upheld the earlier Federal High Court decision and awarded ₦2 million in costs against the Zenith Labour Party.
