Akwa Ibom Bans Ambulances From Transporting Corpses for Burial

The Akwa Ibom State Government has outlawed the use of ambulances to convey corpses for burial. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John, said any ambulance found transporting a corpse could be impounded. The rule applies to private, mission-owned and government ambulances. According to the commissioner, corpses should be transported in hearses, while ambulances must remain available for emergency medical services. He said the measure is part of reforms under the state’s emergency medical service law. The government has also sent several health-related bills to the State House of Assembly, including proposals on hospital governance, public health security, HIV protection and minimum standards for healthcare facilities.
