Jamaica Seeks FIFA Clarification Over DR Congo Goalkeeper Eligibility
The Jamaica Football Federation says it will contact FIFA over reports that DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi may have been ineligible for their March 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoff. Jamaica lost the match 1-0, ending its World Cup hopes. The concern is whether Mpasi, who played for France at youth level, completed FIFA’s required nationality-switch process before representing DR Congo. Nigeria previously raised a similar complaint after DR Congo eliminated the Super Eagles in the African qualifiers. Reports based on internal FIFA documents suggest officials considered whether Nigeria could replace DR Congo in the playoff, but FIFA ruled Nigeria’s protest inadmissible and said no valid appeal followed. The Jamaican federation says it will first establish the facts with FIFA before deciding whether to take further action.
