What Does Matthew 5:17–18 Mean for Christian Women and the Law of Moses?

In this excerpt from my book, I examine Jesus’ statement that He came not to destroy the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfil them. I argue that this does not mean Christians are required to enforce every Mosaic law. Using Jesus’ Sabbath-day teachings and healings, I discuss how He placed mercy, love and doing good above legalistic interpretations. I also consider passages in Romans, Galatians, Hebrews and Colossians on the New Covenant and life in the Spirit. My central argument is that Christians, including women, should not be judged by Old Testament dress-code interpretations such as Deuteronomy 22:5. I argue that Christian conduct should be guided by faith, love and decency rather than legalism.
