MOUAU Council Tenure Dispute: Legal Review Says Seven Members’ Terms Have Expired

A legal review of the tenure dispute at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, states that the terms of seven internal Governing Council members ended on September 7, 2026. The affected members were inaugurated on September 8, 2022, for a four-year term. They reportedly argue that the 2023 dissolution of governing councils reduced their sitting time and should extend their tenure until October 2027. The review maintains that a tenure extension must be expressly authorised by law and cannot arise automatically from a council dissolution or administrative delay. It adds that the Vice-Chancellor has been asked to address the matter through the university’s statutory bodies and begin the process of filling vacant positions where necessary.
