Should Catholic Parishes in Nigeria Be Promoting Tithes?
A Catholic priest has questioned the growing use of “tithe Sundays,” tithe accounts and special blessings for tithers in some Nigerian Catholic parishes. He argues that while Catholics should support the Church, the poor, evangelisation and parish projects, giving should remain voluntary and rooted in faith, gratitude and love. He says tithing is not a universal Catholic obligation. The concern is that language and practices around tithing may pressure worshippers or suggest that financial contributions are required for God’s blessing. Catholics should give according to their means, without guilt or fear.
