Lagos Explains ₦13,000 Randle Hospital Dispute, Says Patient Got ₦93,950 Support
The Lagos State Government says its investigation into a complaint involving Randle General Hospital found that a 21-year-old patient received free emergency treatment and financial support worth ₦93,950. According to the state health commissioner, the woman was treated as an emergency patient under the CEmONC programme on August 4 and discharged on August 11 without being charged for care valued at ₦75,950. She later returned for follow-up care and received ₦5,000 and ₦13,000 from the hospital’s Social Welfare Unit. The dispute reportedly arose when she sought a refund for the ₦13,000 welfare payment after an NGO offered to cover her investigations. The government said such welfare payments cannot be refunded through the hospital paypoint and denied claims that treatment was delayed or that the patient was extorted. The state said it is improving hospital payment systems and welfare support to ensure financial hardship does not prevent patients from accessing emergency healthcare.
