Egypt Sacks Hossam Hassan Amid Private-Life Row, Names Ali Maher as Successor
The Egyptian Football Association has dismissed national team coach Hossam Hassan and his staff, citing concerns that recent events could harm the team’s image and stability. Ali Maher, who coaches Ceramica Cleopatra, has been appointed as his successor ahead of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi on November 13 and 17. The decision followed a media appearance ban imposed on Hassan by Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation over a case involving his former wife, Dina Mostafa, also known as Dan Adam. Local media reported that Hassan’s lawyers accused her of forging official documents and bigamy. Her representatives denied the allegations. Hassan also faced criticism over his handling of Mohamed Salah during an earlier qualifier. He took charge in March 2024 and leaves with 21 wins, 10 draws and seven defeats in 38 matches. Egypt reached the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup and finished fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations.
