Boko Haram Member Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison, Term Backdated to 2016
A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Abubakar Goni, a self-confessed Boko Haram member from Yobe State, to 30 years in prison for belonging to the proscribed terrorist group. Goni admitted that he knowingly joined the group more than 15 years ago. Prosecutors said he received AK-47 training, took part in attacks on civilians, looted food for insurgents and joined cross-border raids into Niger Republic. He pleaded guilty to the membership charge but denied the other counts. Justice Binta Nyako imposed the sentence under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act. The court ordered that the prison term should begin from 2016, when Goni was arrested and remanded by the Department of State Services.
