NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja Dies at 60
Nigeria Labour Congress General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja has died at the age of 60 following a prolonged illness. NLC President Joe Ajaero reportedly informed members of the Congress’ National Executive Council during a meeting in Enugu after receiving a letter from Ugboaja’s family. Ugboaja became the fifth General Secretary of the NLC in 2019. A lawyer and veteran trade unionist, he spent more than three decades in organised labour and was regarded as the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union. Before leading the NLC secretariat, he held senior roles in industrial relations and organising. He also served as General Secretary of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees and participated in national political and constitutional reform conferences.
