Mixed Messages from Defence Minister Shake Public Trust and Troop Morale

WhichWayNigeria has raised alarm over contradictory statements by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.). The group warns that these mixed signals could erode public confidence and lower troop morale in the fight against terrorism and banditry. The minister was first reported to have urged troops to confront terrorists and bandits decisively “without waiting for approval.” Days later, he stressed that “no country can shoot itself to peace” and called for a “whole-of-society approach” to insecurity. According to the association, inconsistent messaging at this level breeds uncertainty among citizens and within the security architecture. They argue that clear rules of engagement and coherent strategic guidance are essential for effective operations. WhichWayNigeria is urging the Defence Minister to publicly clarify the official rules of engagement and align all statements with the federal government’s counter-terrorism policy. Consistent leadership, the group says, is vital to maintain confidence and protect Nigerians.

True, unclear statements from the minister really undermine trust in leadership and leave soldiers uncertain about orders.

It's concerning when official statements clash so publicly, leaving citizens unsure which update to trust from the defence ministry.

I'm not convinced that mixed statements automatically erode morale; troops might adapt quickly when leadership clarifies strategy.

Consistent updates and clear protocols should be prioritised to rebuild public trust and keep soldiers informed and motivated on the ground.
