Nigeria Joins 13 Nations Backing Saudi-Led Maritime Defence Alliance
Nigeria is among 14 countries that have backed a Saudi-led multinational maritime defence coalition aimed at protecting key trade and energy routes. Saudi Arabia says the countries welcomed progress on the coalition's founding arrangements after a meeting involving military chiefs and representatives from 43 nations, as well as the European Union delegation. Some other countries have indicated support but are still completing their domestic approval processes. The proposed alliance comes as tensions in the Red Sea worsen. The Houthis have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia and reportedly attacked Saudi tankers, raising fresh concerns about shipping security and oil exports.
