Archaeologists Uncover Roman-Era Road Beneath Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre
Archaeologists have uncovered a Roman-era road beneath Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a site revered by Christians as the place of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, burial and resurrection. The excavation, led by Sapienza University of Rome, has revealed different phases of the area’s history, including a Roman street beneath the apse of the early Christian church. Researchers began the project in 2022 while restoring parts of the church’s flooring. The discovery may help historians understand the landscape around Golgotha and the development of the church complex. However, researchers have not established that Jesus personally walked on the newly uncovered road or identified his exact route to crucifixion.
