Ooni of Ife Gives NBA Star Jaylen Brown Yoruba Name, Babatunde
NBA star Jaylen Brown received a royal welcome at the Ooni of Ife’s palace in Ile-Ife, where he was honoured with the Yoruba name “Babatunde.” The name means “the father has returned” or “the ancestor has returned.” The Ooni said the honour formally connects Brown with his Yoruba ancestral heritage. The monarch described Ile-Ife as a spiritual and historical centre of Yoruba civilisation. He encouraged people of African descent in the diaspora to visit and reconnect with their roots. Brown, a former NBA Finals MVP, has previously expressed interest in his African heritage.
