NAUS Raises Alarm Over Doctor Exodus, Seeks Urgent Action on Health Worker Retention
The National Association of University Students has raised concerns over the continued departure of Nigerian doctors and other health workers, blaming poor working conditions, low pay, inadequate facilities, inflation and insecurity. The association said more than 15,000 doctors have left Nigeria in the past three years, worsening access to healthcare. It also warned that understaffed university health centres and the shortage of specialists, including psychiatrists and gynaecologists, leave students and young people particularly vulnerable. NAUS called for an emergency salary review for health workers, better-equipped teaching hospitals, a functional student health insurance scheme, and stronger security and retention incentives for medical professionals.
