Michelle Obama and Tems Empower Young Women at Obama Center Songwriting Workshop
As part of the Obama Presidential Center’s opening week, former First Lady Michelle Obama and Grammy-winner Tems surprised 15 high school girls in a songwriting workshop on June 16. Led by teaching artist Me’Chelle Robinson, participants worked in small groups to craft original songs and poems. The session focused on confidence, storytelling and collaboration as creative tools for self-expression. Tems shared insights from her journey as a self-taught artist in Lagos and introduced her Leading Vibe Initiative, which offers mentorship and resources to close the music industry’s gender gap. She urged the young women to trust their voices and pursue their ambitions. Michelle Obama joined the group to celebrate the participants’ work and reinforce the Center’s mission of nurturing talent, amplifying young voices, and inspiring future civic leaders.
