UK-Funded PLANE Programme Reaches 2 Million Children as It Closes in Nigeria
The UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) says it reached more than two million children and supported the training of over 25,000 teachers and facilitators across northern Nigeria since 2019. At the programme’s close-out event in Kaduna, education stakeholders urged state governments to sustain its gains in literacy, numeracy, child protection and learning support for vulnerable children. PLANE was implemented by DAI, UNICEF, Save the Children and other partners. Kaduna State said basic-school enrolment rose from 2.17 million in 2022 to more than 2.57 million in 2025. The state also reported that its number of out-of-school children had fallen to 187,719 after a household mapping exercise across its 23 local government areas. Officials from participating states, including Kano, Jigawa, Borno and Yobe, said the programme’s long-term impact would depend on governments incorporating successful interventions into education policies, budgets and school systems.
